Crafted by the De Villiers family in the beautiful town of Hermanus on South Africa’s Whale Coast, DV Artisan Chocolate is one of the few ‘Bean to Bar’ micro batch chocolate makers in the world.

Artisanal chocolate making has grown in recent years out of a desire to return to ancient chocolate making techniques, promoting the original taste of chocolate and kicking against its degradation into a synthetic, flavoured commodity.  The emphasis is on small batch manufacturing with meticulous attention to detail at every step of the process, from the roasting of the beans right through to the moulding of the bars.

With the ultimate aim of producing superior chocolate, our process starts by sourcing only the finest cocoa beans from all corners of the globe. We have painstakingly sourced beans from 25 of the world’s major growing regions and tested all of these in order to arrive at what we consider to be 5 of the best beans available from which to make our chocolate.

In our small factory we are roasting the beans to develop their optimal flavour profiles.  Thereafter follows a slow process of grinding, refining and conching in our custom built equipment designed to incorporate ancient chocolate making techniques and the precision of modern computerised technology. We believe that this process is unique in optimising the inherent flavours in the bean and that it translates into the ultimate chocolate experience.

Our chocolate contains only authentic ingredients - no artificial colourings or flavourings, no vegetable fats (only pure cocoa butter), no soya lecithin or vanilla. The emphasis is on developing the flavours inherent in the bean and demonstrating how these flavours vary from region to region and depending on the variety of cocoa bean.
