When Noel and Natalie first started exploring raw foods to support their health regime about four years ago, very few people were into it. They started by doing a raw food preparation course and then experimenting at home. But, since eating an appetite-stimulating diet of raw food requires a fair bit of prep-work, this meant that they had to make everything they consumed themselves, from scratch. This would put most people off, but Noel and Natalie saw an opportunity – to make and sell raw food products.

Contrary to what many people may think, a raw food diet does not consist only of salads; food is considered raw up to 46oC.  Above this temperature valuable enzymes and vitamins get destroyed, but 46 degrees is plenty to work with, which means there’s plenty one can do to prepare and ‘cook’ a raw meal.

Noel and Natalie’s experience of being raw foodies is enviable – the more raw food they include in their diets, the higher their energy levels are, the less frequently they get colds or flu’s and the more positive they feel about life generally. They’re not the only ones who have noted the benefits of raw – there is a new appreciation by microbiological scientists of the important role raw nutrients and enzymes play within the body. And as conventional cooking destroys 50 to 80% of these good things, we’re losing out on an opportunity to support optimum health every time we eat.

Earthshine’s mission is to create tasty, incredibly healthy dishes out of the best local South African raw ingredients. They use seasonal organic ingredients as far as possible so everything is virgin fresh. Their signature meal is their raw pizza. It takes almost a week to prepare, from the sprouting of the gluten-free buckwheat kernels to the blending of the cashew nut cream (an excellent cheese replacement!), making the raw pizza a real ‘slow food’ experience (customers need only order one day prior to delivery though). The Food With A Story team can vouch for the fact that there is no compromise to be made over a regular pizza – the Earthshine pizza is a flavour bonanza in the mouth!

While initially all the green pizza ingredients came straight from Noel and Natalie’s abundant kitchen garden (which happen to use 100% recycled water from their house), they now need to source from other organic growers. They know and trust their fresh suppliers, having developed good relationships through constant dialogue. They also focus on getting to know their customers and appreciate the constructive feedback they get through their Facebook page and website.

Noel and Natalie aren’t about dictating healthy lifestyles to others. They just feel so positive about their raw food experience that they highly recommend including as much raw food into ones diet as possible. For them Earthshine is about making this process as easy and tasty as possible.

Earthshine will soon be making an appearance at the Neighbourgoods market in Woodstock, Cape Town, and Noel and Natalie also have plans to take their pizza and other products to more markets. Watch out for a raw-volution happening near you!

Benefits of raw pizza

  • The base is made of sprouted buckwheat – an amazing gluten free grain high in nutrients and protein and easily digested.
  • The base also contains ground up golden flax seed - rich in omega oils and fibre.
  • Earthshine uses only pure spring water from the Newlands spring to prepare its products.
  • The business aims to be as energy efficient as possible and is currently looking at carbon off-setting through tree planting.
  • What was once a junk-food is now a super-food!!
