Organic Footprints

This veggie box scheme focuses as much on supporting local Port Elizabeth producers as it does on sourcing certified organic. So it's a mix of both local, non-certified organic, and local organic.

A veggie box with a community spirit

Port Elizabeth, though a city, is kind of like a village. And in a village, everyone looks out for each other. So it makes sense that PE’s veggie box service looks to local community producers to source their goods. The fruit and veg you’ll find in your Organic Footprints box is sourced from prison gardens, loca community gardens in Walmer, and maybe even your granny’s garden.

One plus one equals a whole new direction

Nicola was a game ranger for 12 years, during which time she had the opportunity to get to know a group of organic citrus farmers in the Sundays River Valley. She began thinking about the environmental issues around farming, and after a “hair-raising encounter with an angry elephant bull” Nicola decided to leave ranging and start growing organically. Soon she was growing so much that she was giving away more than she could eat, and began thinking about selling to make some income.

At the same time, Gary, and engineer in the automotive industry, was getting tired of working too hard and never really enjoying his life. When the global recession hit his industry, he started researching the potential of aquaponic farming. A chance meeting brought Gary and Nicola together and the idea for Organic Footprints was born.

Locavore is as important than organic certifications

Because of this Locavore approach, Organic Footprints isn’t 100% organic. Gary and Nicola say most of it is, but they’re not sticky about organic certifications because the many local producers are too small to be able to afford the process.
