Prince Albert Extra Virgin Olive Oil

from Zo'Ar - Essence of Taste

Prince Albert Olives is a member of the SA Olive Association, a producers organisations chaired by Andries Rabie. Andries is the owner of Willoc Creek. The most important project of SA Olive currently is the implementation of a countervailing levy which is basically an import levy on olive oil from the European Union. The goal thereof is to level the playing field since producers in the European Union receive government subsidies equivalent to R15/Litre. The International Olive Council provides guidelines for how to classify olive oil as extra virgin. It comprises a chemical analysis and an organoleptic assessment (smell and taste). The chemical analysis measures the 1) free acidity - an indication of the quality of the oil, when free acidity increases, quality reduces and 2) peroxide value - an indication of the level of oxidation or exposure to air - when the peroxide level increases, the level of oxidation increases. Each country has its own governing body who implements the guidelines in their country. SA Olive encourages local producers to subject their oil to the Commitment to Compliance Scheme where SA Olive, in addition to the chemical analysis, subjects the oil to an organoleptic assessment. If the oil is accepted the producer can apply the CTC seal on its product which confirms to the consumer that SA Olive has independently certified the oil as extra virgin (for more detail refer to SA Olives hosts an annual competition for its members. Oils are judged in three categories namely intense, medium and delicate - depending in the combination of fruitiness, bitterness and pepperiness of the oil. Prince Albert Olives' 'Karoo Blend' is a blend of the Italian varieties Frantoio, Coratina and FS17 (Favalosa) and is made in a medium style. The 'Karoo Blend' received the following awards from SA Olive - 2010: Gold, 2011: Silver, 2012: Gold.
